Kompulze (2013)
Looking for more or less absurd boundaries between things is a common theme of my work. This is how Compulsion came to be – based on the search for the division line between graphics and interactive art. I wanted to put my experience with graphics into good use and make another step forward. Thus a sort of a generator – a kinetic object driven by human power – was presented at the exhibition called Truth has artificial nails in gallery Bunkr in Most. The generator consists of a table on top of which there is a network of wooden handles connected to a system of pulleys hidden under the table. It is in fact a kind of a trap. Before the exhibition, all handles but one were all aligned in one direction. The unsuspecting victim, who tries to put everything into order, puts the hoist under the table into motion and another few handles turn into different directions. The system is designed so that it is not possible to reverse the process. So the more you try to fix everything, the greater chaos you create. The table was recorded by a camera on the ceiling. After the first unsuspecting person, nobody could resist the temptation to turn at least one of the handles. Thus a video of gallery visitors randomly interfering with the installation was made. Also note the changes of light caused by people moving around the generator. The video it self become the way how to bring a balance back to chaos.
