Connection lost (Far from Nowhere) 2023
Porozumění odlišným kulturám se může zdát jako dobrý základ pro intelektuální růst většiny jednotlivců. Jsme ale schopni překonat to, jak jsme byli vychováni, jak se v průběhu času formovaly naše priority, a doopravdy porozumět něčemu tak naprosto odlišnému? Chápat jinou kulturu bez potřeby slepého porovnávání, ale skutečně porozumět i tomu, s čím nesouhlasíme. Zařadit to do místního kontextu a ne jen slepě odsoudit to, čemu nerozumíme. Je pozorování a objevování jiných kultur skutečným klíčem k porozumění nám samotným? Cestou k poznání toho, jak hluboko sahá naše vlastní pokrytectví a nepřizpůsobivost?
To jsou otázky vtělené do série Far from Nowhere, vytvořené v rámci rezidenčního programu v japonské Toyamě.
Série je z větší části vytvořena pomocí technologie tavené plastiky, na kterou se autorka specializuje. Základem pro objekty jsou předměty získané na místě rezidence, které autorka považuje za specifické pro danou oblast, ať už z osobních či objektivních důvodů. Původní objekty jsou spojené s místní komunitou a událostmi, které autorka v průběhu svého pobytu zažila. Jedná se stejnou měrou o dárky, nalezené i zakoupené předměty. Vzniká tak odlišný obraz nejen oblasti Toyamashi, ale také autorčiny schopnosti tento výrazně odlišný kulturní prostor vnímat.
Tyto objekty jsou následně transformovány nejen do nového materiálu – recyklovaného skla –, ale často také do nového tvaru a kontextu. Výsledné skleněné objekty jsou dále doplněny dalšími materiály, které zvýrazňují jejich význam i estetiku.
Série je tvořena jednotlivými menšími celky s vlastními dílčími tématy. V tomto případě se jedná o podskupinu objektů a videí s názvem Connection Lost. Tato trojice využívá reálné předměty získané v místních bazarech – předměty hluboce spjaté s japonskou kulturou. Pomocí transformace jejich částí do čirého skla vzniká jakási mezera mezi autorem/aktérem videí a samotným předmětem, jeho významem a účelem.
Projekt vznikl v rámci programu Artist in Residence v Toyama Institute of Glass Art v roce 2023.
V témže roce byl projekt prezentován na samostatné výstavě v Toyama Museum of Glass Art pod názvem Far from Nowhere.
Understanding different cultures may seem like a solid foundation for the intellectual growth of most individuals. But are we truly capable of overcoming the way we were raised, the priorities shaped over time, and genuinely understanding something so fundamentally different? Can we perceive another culture without the need for blind comparison, and instead truly understand even that with which we disagree? To place it within its local context rather than hastily condemning what we do not understand. Is observing and discovering other cultures a true key to understanding ourselves? A path toward recognizing how deeply our own hypocrisy and inability to adapt may reach?
These questions are embodied in the series Far from Nowhere, created during a residency program in Toyama, Japan.
The series is largely created using the technique of fused glass, in which the artist specializes. The objects are based on items acquired at the place of the residency—objects the artist considers specific to the region, whether for personal or objective reasons. The original items are connected to the local community and events experienced by the artist during the residency. They include gifts, found objects, and purchased items in equal measure. This process creates a distinct image not only of the Toyamashi area, but also of the artist’s ability to perceive and interpret a profoundly different cultural environment.
These objects are subsequently transformed not only into a new material—recycled glass—but often into a new form and context as well. The resulting glass objects are further combined with other materials to enhance both their meaning and their aesthetic qualities.
The series consists of several smaller units with their own sub-themes. In this case, it includes a subgroup of objects and videos titled Connection Lost. This trio employs real objects obtained from local flea markets—items deeply connected to Japanese culture. Through the transformation of parts of these objects into clear glass, a kind of gap emerges between the author/performer of the videos and the object itself, its meaning, and its original function.
The project was created within the Artist in Residence program at the Toyama Institute of Glass Art in 2023.
In the same year, the project was presented in a solo exhibition at the Toyama Museum of Glass Art under the title Far from Nowhere.
